Today's sacrificial tip for writers, is to Covet Your Alone Time! Most people think of Lent as something that you need to give up. but at church this last weekend, our Pastor pointed out that Lent can also involve beginning a new habit to carry throughout the year. His suggestion was to sacrifice some personal time and devote yourself to reading the Bible daily. Great suggestion! And the Bible is the single most inspirational book that I have ever read. But for writers we need to take this a step further. After your alone time with God, extend that alone time to include your books. Don't let life encroach on your writing time - whether that be actual writing, or just figuring stuff out before it goes down onto paper. Cherish your time, covet it above all other things in your life. Continue this 40 day Lenten journey with me as we discover better ways to be better writers, through the teachings of Christ! It is a most Holy time for Christians across the globe. As writer's, especially full-time employed writers, there needs to be some sacrifices to make time for our craft. So, let's start off with the big one, and for many, the one that will hurt the most. TV; The boob tube; The sqwak box; The instrument responsible for the dumbing down of society; TV. I have to admit that I am addicted to Food Network. I love cooking shows, especially the competition type. Top Chef, on Bravo Channel is my favorite television show these days, and has been for 12 years now. One of the reasons is that when I get home from a long day at work (medical billing and collections) my brain is tired. Food TV is easy to watch. It's not taxing to my senses. I can leave halfway through the show, come back a bit later and not really miss anything - yet I turn it on every single day. In fact, it's on right now, and I'm not even watching it. I listen to it instead. Yet, if I were to turn it off, then my mind could be clear to work on writing rather than the distraction of white noise in the background. I could get more done - more research, writing, plotting, story boarding, marketing, blogging, etc. if I would just turn it off for a night to focus. So that's my first sacrifice for Lent. And, after all, we have these magical creations called DVR's, or for the old school folks, VCR's. Sacrificing TV doesn't have to be every day. Just something to think about. See life differently. But not just books, epic fantasy adventures that would transport me to another world and another time. For me, dragons, or as I prefer to call them DragINZ are real. Other people have had conflicts with this, but I never have. During the church's "fire and brimstone" age that was going out when I was a little bitty Lutheran, I remember being told that fantasy works were evil, and the writings were of the devil. I knew in my heart that this was not true. We experience that even now. Harry Potter was condemned as evil and a work of the occult by people who had never even read it! That was not only unfair, but just plain wrong. I LOVE Harry Potter. Yes, I said that. So let's think about it factually, or rather Biblically. God created man in His own image. I have an imagination, so that means God must have one too. If you doubt that, just look around. On the fifth day, God said “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” ...On the sixth day God said “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds, the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” No names are given, or descriptions. There could have been dragINZ. ~ So why not both? Creatures that can move upon the ground AND fly in the air? Birds can. So can DragINZ. I think the conflict is that someone decided a long time ago that the image of DragINS are the likeness of serpents, so therefore inherently evil. Have you ever been judged unfairly by someone? Have you heard things like... all (fill in ethnic group here)'s are criminals; or all (fill in ethnic group here)'s are stupid? That's judgmental, and one of our big no-no's! DragINS don't judge you, so let's not judge them! In the 1800's a little girl was walking with her father on the sea shore. The waves had uncovered the bones of a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex. She looked up at her father and said, "Look Daddy! A Dragon!" Open your mind and your heart. Let a little fantasy in. Your faith can handle it! God made you that way. And check out what the DragINZ can do in my new book, The PriZin of Zin! See life differently. According to Wikipedia (no email about my sources please): Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting, is the first day of Lent in Western Christianity. It occurs 46 days (40 fasting days, if the 6 Sundays, which are not days of fast, are excluded) before Easter and can fall as early as 4 February or as late as 10 March. Ash Wednesday is observed by many Western Christians, including Catholics,[note 1] Lutherans, Methodists, Anglicans, and Presbyterians.[1] According to the canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus Christ spent 40 days fasting in the desert, where he endured temptation by Satan.[2] Lent originated as a mirroring of this, fasting 40 days as preparation for Easter. Every Sunday was seen as a commemoration of the Sunday of Christ's resurrection and so as a feast day on which fasting was inappropriate. Accordingly, Christians fasted from Monday to Saturday (6 days) during 6 weeks and from Wednesday to Saturday (4 days) in the preceding week, thus making up the number of 40 days.[3] Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches blessed on the previous year's Palm Sunday, and placing them on the heads of participants to the accompaniment of the words "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return".[4] So, for writers what does this mean? For me, to have the time to write means sacrifice. I still have a more-than-full-time job. I am a single mom, a working mom, church volunteer, and author. Something, somewhere has to give. So for the next 40 days of Lent, we will explore some things that we, as writers, can sacrifice to be better writers, and better Christians. Hopefully these things will bring us closer to our work, and closer to God. So come with me on a journey of Sacrifice and Self-examination. Christ gave His life for all, what can we give up for Him?
