Deadlines | While it may seem unrealistic, before Christ was born, he was on a deadline. The time had come for Him to make his grand entrance. It was time for his Launch Party. His arrival was announced by a Heavenly Choir, and witnessed by the meek of the earth. It was time. He did not ask for a delay. The story did not take a sudden turn. There were no plans for a sequel, or three part trilogy. Sales were not discussed around a meeting of the elders. The tiny Christ-child was delivered in time, without delay, in perfect coordination with the carefully laid out plan that the Great I Am laid out. When you have hit your deadline, do you panic? Does your story change? Or did you stick to the carefully laid out plans? Sometimes the first initial draft is the best. If we spend too much time trying to change and perfect things, it can completely change the meaning of the story. Go with your gut. Follow your instincts. Listen to that still, small voice inside... It will never steer you wrong. See life differently. Celebration! The people of the day didn't know it.
Mary didn't know it. Joseph didn't know it. The religious elite certainly didn't know it. But the shepherds and the angels knew. This birth would be like none other. This just wasn't a baby. This was the King; and a King that would save all of humanity - from itself. Do our books contain any kind of celebration? A celebration of life, or a surprise of some kind? Do our characters walk around in the dark, not really knowing what or why things are happening? Or is there a deeper meaning? And while the characters may not realize what is happening at the time, does the true meaning of celebration shine through in the end? During this Christmas season, think about all the reasons that we have to celebrate. Reasons both writing related, and not. What personal reasons do you have to thanking the infant King for? I know my list is far too long to post here. Celebrate! Christmas isn't about presents, or lights, or turkey. It is a celebration for all ages. One that made the angels sing and the shepherds stop and stare. He was born, and He still lives. Partaaaaaaay!~ See life differently. To take a situation so outrageous, so wrong, so mesmerizing and entrancing that people can't put the book down, and craft it into a story that is unforgettable. We have a good example - but it's not fiction. This is real. A God and His Son. His only Son. A Son that He loves with all His heart, but a God who loves a lost world too. A Son so obedient to His Father that He was willing to endure the worst death imaginable for the day - the death of a criminal. The kind of death saved for the worst of the worst, all so that we would not be held accountable for our wrongs in this life. A perfect example of the kind of love that God holds for us. A love that transcends space and time. A love story to last for all eternity. Next week we celebrate the birth of this tiny King's human existence. Something so unbelievable it's believable. Something so outrageous it can't be anything but true. Truly, the greatest story ever told. See life differently. Sometimes life can be too comfortable... too predictable. Our stories can be too. Jesus came to shake things up. He came to change the religious establishment and to show them a new way. Mankind's interpretations God's laws were strangling to the Jews of the day and people felt helpless and lost. Enter- the King of all Kings. Jesus came to show a new way. He came to show the religious leaders that hypocrites they were. He came to save a lost world. He came for me. Shake up your stories. Show your characters a new a different way. When they are strangled by the events they have gotten themselves into, show them a new light. Give them hope. See life differently.

Mary's attitude. Anyone that has ever been pregnant knows that while there is extreme excitement at the beginning, as the time of delivery comes - bringing with it swollen ankles, shooting nerve pains, morning sickness (yes, you can have it at the end too), backaches, headaches, always going to the bathroom, can't get full enough, can never get comfortable - sometimes that excitement fades. Pregnancy is work. It's hard to bring forth a tiny little human into the world, forming its very being inside of you for all of that time. And for us humans, that is when the complaining sets in. Throw on top of that serious change in plans, and you can have a serious change in attitude. I can only imagine what my reaction would have been. The Bible doesn't tell us anything about the trip, other than Mary and Joseph took it, as they were required to do by the law of the land they lived in. They were obedient. Not only to God, but to the rulers of their land. Are you obedient? To the government, and to God? If God wants you to go a certain direction, with either your story or your life, are you willing to do that? And without complaint? It's the complaint thing that gets me. I find myself identifying more with Job sometimes. Yes, I will follow God, but I will let everyone know if I am miserable. Time to change my attitude, and be more like what Christ teaches me to be. I think for Christmas I want a change of heart. See life differently. So, to that end, let's talk about being unprepared. We last left our story with Mary and Joseph being in the stable because the Inn was full. I guess they didn't think ahead to make reservations. It must have been hard back then with no internet. But if you think about it, how could they really prepare? Jesus was a carpenter by trade, so I am reasonable sure that he learned it from his earthly father. I would guess that Joseph had made a small crib for his new child to sleep in - at home. But then here comes Caesar Agustus and throws a wrench in the whole system making them take a long and tiresome journey at 9 months pregnant. Plans change. Life happens. So in your writing, when life gets in the way, how do you handle it? Are you thankful for a stable and a manger? Or do you quit and give up? Plans change. Maybe God wanted you to go a different direction, either with your work or with your life. Are you adaptable? Can you take a long and tiresome journey and still serve God at the end? Something to think about. See life differently. Why is a little boy being born such a miracle? The big deal is that Mary had never been with a man, so this was no ordinary baby. You see, Jesus could not be interpreted to be a child of man in any possible way. He had to come to this earth in a special way. That's why he was announced ahead of time by an angel directly to his earthly mother and father. His coming was also foretold by the prophets for many generations beforehand. And why He came by birth from a virgin. So no one could say that Him being here was anything less than a miracle. Have you ever experienced a miracle? Especially in your writing? Some people call this a "character driven novel". The idea is that you create your characters and they take on such a life of their own that they drive the story forward. I prefer to call it the God-driven novel. I believe that He has put certain characters, traits, storylines, and issues on our hearts to be utilized in our stories. Without God, there would be no story. If you have ever experienced this, you will know. I have experienced this many times, but none so prevalent as my encounter with 'the feather'. Stay tuned for the next blog post. Since that one incident, I have always used the phrase: His stories, My fingers. See life differently.
