Fifty three years ago today, the President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas.
I was a small child. My earliest memory as a 4 year old was of the horse drawn carriage the day of JFK's funeral, with the grieving family looking on in the background. I had no idea at the time what that meant for our country, or why my mother cried in front of the black and white television set that we had.
The country was embroiled in the beginnings of the Viet Nam War, Kennedy had won the election by less than 100,000 votes, and segregation tore the south apart.
The country reeled from his assassination, as did others from his presidency.
My point is this: We have been through tough times as a country before, and we will go through tough times as a country again. Like it or not, Donald Trump is now the President-Elect of the United States. He will soon be the leader of the free world, and Commander-in-Chief of the most elite military in the world. You can dislike the man, but still support him as president.
On this solemn day when we remember another president, cut down in his prime, we can look forward to a new administration with all of the changes and hope for the future that will bring.
If you are not a Trump supporter, get involved in politics. Write your Congressman. Find out who your Senator is. Become vocal. Learn their policies and what they stand for. If you are not registered to vote, get registered. Encourage your family and friends to do the same. Get involved, and learn how to pray. That is the most powerful thing you can do.
I look forward to the future with hope and anticipation, while never forgetting where we came from as a nation. "Those who do not remember the past, are condemned to repeat it." Let's learn from the past, and move forward into a united future. It is our differences that bring us together and make this nation great.
