The Birth of the King!

He is here!

The Christ-child has been born!

Let all the world rejoice and sing Hallelujah with the angels in heaven above!

It is an event like the world has never seen before, and will never see again.

God ordained that every seventh day should be a day of rest. Today is that day for me. No writing, no plotting, no thinking about anything except the tiny soul that came to this earth to save me. Imagine. Me.

If no one else on this earth had ever been born, or needed saving in any way - if all of mankind was perfect except for me, Christ would still have come and endured all that He did so that I, me, Lori would be able to be in Heaven with the Holy Trinity for all eternity.

That thought blows my mind sometimes. And so, today is a day for the King of all Kings.

Happy Birthday my savior. I am glad you came.

Get Ready World! Here He Comes!

In all likelihood, Mary would have been in labor today. If babies were anything back then like they are today, the firstborns tend to take a long time. It is a time of great labor, followed by great celebration.

Having had two children, I can tell you that your focus narrows when the intense pains come. The world can be in complete chaos around you, and the only thing you can focus on is what is happening with your own body and the tiny body of the child inside.

As our labors come to completion with our writing, and the intense labor pains of completion, deadlines, editing, re-writing, and re-re-writing. Proof again and again, pain over and over, will produce a beautiful tiny baby book - something to be celebrated again and again in the coming years.

So in the final stages, as the last pains of birth rack you with extreme intensity over and over again, do not give up hope. Do not throw your project away, or delay unnecessarily. For the joy to come is just around the corner, and it is far more amazing than you could ever imagine.

What's Most Important

Life is full of craziness, but in life we have to make choices. And one of those choices is what's most important to us. Is it money, status, titles, belongings, or the people that are in our lives. To me, it will always be a living, breathing person. The ones that are the most important to me, are the ones that show me their feelings back again. People come and go throughout life, some of them for good reason. Not everyone treats you the way that they should. Life situations, and feelings get in the way. Insecurity, competitive nature, all lead to abusive relationships and letting loved ones go.

What is most important to your characters? Are they the right choices, or the wrong ones. And when a mistake is made, how do they get themselves out of it?

Christmas time is a time to be surrounded by those you love, and those that love you back. the most important one to remember is the man whose birthday we celebrate. Christ the tiny King.

Family and Friends

Christmas should be about people, not things or meals. In some families it turns into a battle for control, or a keep-up-with-the-Jonses present fest. Many of us have lost sight of what the holiday truly means and why we celebrate it each year. For me, it has turned into a time to re-group and take stock of who is in my life and why. Those that love and encourage me for who and what I am, are still here. Those that have made it their life's battle to control me, or put me down, are not.

What have your characters lost sight of? How have they gotten off track, and how will you get them back? What obstacles (either people or circumstances) have they had to come to terms with in order to get past who and where they are?

Remember this Christmas, that we are celebrating relationships. It is the relationship that we have with Christ that is the most important of all.

Treasures from Heaven

Of all the treasures that are stored up in Heaven, the greatest, without a doubt was the one that came down to earth. And like most treasures, He was not recognized for His true value while among us. Jesus was misunderstood, unrecognized, and finally beaten and killed.

Of your characters in your story arc, which are misunderstood, thrown out with yesterday's trash, and left unrecognized for what and who they really are?

And, for that matter, as an author, are you?

Fear not, you are in some great company.

We've all done it, and hopefully learned from it. It happens to the best of us. Your brain is rolling along at 90 mph and your fingers can barely keep up. Your brain knows what it meant to say, but your fingers - going on auto-pilot typed something else.

Overcome the Odds

The odds for our tiny King were against Him from the beginning. He was born of humble means, a long way from home, with a ruler that wanted Him dead, and a spiritual enemy lying in wait. But He refused to give up. He overcame the odds.

I chose the titles for these blog posts several weeks ago, so it surprised me when I pulled this one up today. This morning I got the pleasure of delivering the goods from our coat and blanket drive at work and church. I saw a lot of needy people - people who life had dumped on in one way or another. People who refused to give up. The odds were stacked against them, homeless, hungry, cold, lost and alone. And through the blessed efforts of Lutheran Social Services, they had a place to go, and a meal served by people who care. It was a true blessing to me to be able to see the heart of Jesus at work right in front of my eyes.

When your characters are faced by overwhelming odds, do they just give up and die (not a good story) or do they fight back? Do they need a helping hand by someone who cares, or do they go it alone? What obstacles do they need to meet or conquer in order to reach their goal?

Adversity is part of life. How you address it is what shapes you as a person, or a character.
