I have to admit, there are few non-fiction books that I read, but as soon as I heard about this book by Hollywood star, Leah Remini, I bought it immediately, and I could not put it down. I read this book faster than I have read anything else in a long time. It is compelling and poignant. She talks of her treatment and escape from the Scientology cult.
Second generation Scientologist, she was indoctrinated at a young age. Leah grew up in the 'church' and defended it mightily. Until she saw through the masks and the blatant manipulation. She speaks openly of the rigid rules and requirements (money and time) that the church requires. She gives heart-wrenching examples of the punishment the church inflicts on its members if they do not tow the line. She speaks of the hurt and betrayal after dedicating her entire life to what she thought was right. Ostracised by everyone and everything she held dear, Leah is no longer allowed to be in the presence of any practicing Scientologist because she has been deemed a Subversive Person. The enemy. Lower than low. She is nothing to them.
But she is something to me. What an inspiration! She has openly admitted her own faults and wrongs before the 'church' could destroy her publically. Leah shows a kind of courage that is rare these days. Kuddos to her for finding the strength to stand up against this organization. Thanks to her having the strength and stamina to stand up and speak out, perhaps others can find that same strength and escape their captivity and get their lives back.
This book is a MUST READ for anyone wishing to know more about the inner workings of the Church of Scientology.
