Book Review disclaimer: Being a fantasy author, I felt that the "star system" was way too boring. I will be assigning between one and five dragons to my reviews. (Five dragons meaning the book stole my heart). So, here we go.

My Review: 5 Dragons

Spoiler Alert: In the title is a give away to the book ending: but not all.

This book made me laugh, and cry. It is beautifully written and engaging.

How can an unwanted child, left in the morgue to die, grow up into a bundle of irrepressible joy and bubbling laughter?

Follow Mary through her fictionalized memoir on her life's journey to find the undying love of a Savior. With more than the average number of challenges in her lifetime, Mary has never lost her spirit of humility and hope. Her infectious joy and constant merriment can lift a room and leave you all laughing. I have gained insight and learned things about my own life through her journey.

This book is enlightening, engaging, and an easy read.

Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

Get Ready World! Here He Comes!

In all likelihood, Mary would have been in labor today. If babies were anything back then like they are today, the firstborns tend to take a long time. It is a time of great labor, followed by great celebration.

Having had two children, I can tell you that your focus narrows when the intense pains come. The world can be in complete chaos around you, and the only thing you can focus on is what is happening with your own body and the tiny body of the child inside.

As our labors come to completion with our writing, and the intense labor pains of completion, deadlines, editing, re-writing, and re-re-writing. Proof again and again, pain over and over, will produce a beautiful tiny baby book - something to be celebrated again and again in the coming years.

So in the final stages, as the last pains of birth rack you with extreme intensity over and over again, do not give up hope. Do not throw your project away, or delay unnecessarily. For the joy to come is just around the corner, and it is far more amazing than you could ever imagine.

Mary's attitude.

Anyone that has ever been pregnant knows that while there is extreme excitement at the beginning, as the time of delivery comes - bringing with it swollen ankles, shooting nerve pains, morning sickness (yes, you can have it at the end too), backaches, headaches, always going to the bathroom, can't get full enough, can never get comfortable - sometimes that excitement fades.

Pregnancy is work. It's hard to bring forth a tiny little human into the world, forming its very being inside of you for all of that time. And for us humans, that is when the complaining sets in. Throw on top of that serious change in plans, and you can have a serious change in attitude. I can only imagine what my reaction would have been.

The Bible doesn't tell us anything about the trip, other than Mary and Joseph took it, as they were required to do by the law of the land they lived in. They were obedient. Not only to God, but to the rulers of their land.

Are you obedient? To the government, and to God?
If God wants you to go a certain direction, with either your story or your life, are you willing to do that? And without complaint?
It's the complaint thing that gets me. I find myself identifying more with Job sometimes. Yes, I will follow God, but I will let everyone know if I am miserable.

Time to change my attitude, and be more like what Christ teaches me to be. I think for Christmas I want a change of heart.

So what's the big deal anyway? Why is a little boy being born such a miracle?

The big deal is that Mary had never been with a man, so this was no ordinary baby. You see, Jesus could not be interpreted to be a child of man in any possible way. He had to come to this earth in a special way. That's why he was announced ahead of time by an angel directly to his earthly mother and father. His coming was also foretold by the prophets for many generations beforehand. And why He came by birth from a virgin. So no one could say that Him being here was anything less than a miracle.

Have you ever experienced a miracle? Especially in your writing? Some people call this a "character driven novel". The idea is that you create your characters and they take on such a life of their own that they drive the story forward. I prefer to call it the God-driven novel. I believe that He has put certain characters, traits, storylines, and issues on our hearts to be utilized in our stories. Without God, there would be no story. If you have ever experienced this, you will know.

I have experienced this many times, but none so prevalent as my encounter with 'the feather'. Stay tuned for the next blog post. Since that one incident, I have always used the phrase:

His stories, My fingers.

Who said Christmas is just for kids. We writer's invent magic for our readers, but what about us? Where does our magic come from?

We can draw from the season as well. So let's take a look.

Mary was visited by an angel. (You can't make this stuff up!) She was given a message AND a mission... to bear and raise the Son of God. Wow!

What is your message? And your mission?

Take a few moments to reflect on what the ultimate goal of your writing is.

Is it for the sheer love of writing? Nothing wrong with that.
Is there a message? That's great too.
But is there a mission attached? Are you called to do something nobody else can do?
Think about it. If you were visited by an angel tonight, what would he (they're always male) say?

Hmmmmm. Something to think about on this first day of Advent.
