It wasn’t for money, and it wasn’t for fame. It wasn’t for glory, or for people to know my name. It is between me and God.
I grew up in an era where children were seen and not heard. As one of four children very close in age, it was a struggle to get any personal attention. Sometimes it still feels that way. I felt like no one was listening to me. I was never heard, no matter how hard I tried. I was the independent one. I played by myself, and didn’t really need much, and I guess my parents picked up on that and just let me do my own thing.
As an adult those same feelings come up. I work in a fast-paced environment where priorities can change from minute to minute. I work with a tremendous group of people, but with well over 100 people in the room that I am assigned to, things can get hectic, and often times your voice is not heard.
I was in a relationship with someone who would not listen. I could talk and talk, and he was completely oblivious to the fact that I was even in the same room. He never heard me.
In church one day we did a Spiritual Gifts survey called Network. It was amazing and completely changed my life. In the beginning of the book you are asked to spend time examining yourself and the things that are important to you. There is one question that you have to write down your answer to.
If you could do absolutely anything in the world, and know without a doubt in your heart that you could not fail, what would it be? My answer was simple: Write a book.
It went on from there to share verses like:
“If God is for us, then who can be against us.” Romans 8:31; and
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
When you get to the end, it told you to look back on your answer to that previous question, “If you could do anything…”
Next question: “So what are you waiting for?”
BAM! Right between the eyes. It felt as if someone had actually hit me. I went home that very day and started writing, and I have not stopped. Even through deaths, family trauma and drama, divorce, and heartache. In writing I found my voice. It is my means of communication and the answer to my prayers. People hear me now. I have what I wanted my entire life.
People who listen.
