I mentioned a couple of posts back that instead of giving something up for Lent, as is the traditional custom in Christiandom, we can do something new daily instead. Like reading the Bible (or listening to the audio Bibles. www.BibleGateway.com is good).
We have already talked about giving up junk food and eating more healthy. But one thing we haven't looked at is inside ourselves. As writers we get rejected, put down, and denied a lot. It is something that we just have to live with. And, sometimes it is hard not to let that spill over into our personal relationships too. When we are down, we want to drag everybody else down with us too.
But we can stop. Take some time to process what is happening, and turn it around.
Critique and criticism are not the same things. One is building up, and the other is tearing down. One is for good, and one is not. One causes hurt, and the other helps us grow.
So next time you are being criticized, take a step back and realize that this is not what God wants. And when you are being critiqued - in love - then soak it all up and take it in. It is done for our good.
Give up criticism this year, and every coming year, for Lent and forever. Who needs it anyway?
