What word first comes to mind when you think of being insecure? For me it is fear. Irrational fear. Fear of what might happen. Fear of the future. Fear of what cannot be controlled.
Dig deeper. What do you see? People try to overcome their fears by compensating, or overcompensating. Afraid of being bullied, so you become a bully? Fear of being blamed, so you blame others first? Can't accept responsibility for your actions? Fear of failure, so you take the credit for what everyone else does? What seems like arrogance and selfishness on the outside may actually be crippling insecurity on the inside.
I grew up in a family that suffers from insecurity. At times it is crippling, life-altering, irrational fear. Some members of the family constantly play 'What If?' Just like Chicken Little, for some people the sky is always falling. There is one person in my life who is so deathly afraid of not being good enough, that she has scratched and clawed her way over the top of me for as long as I can remember. In this person's mind, I am the expendable one. Her fears are far greater than my feelings so that justifies it all. In her mind it is acceptable and she sees no problems at all.
This is what happens when we try to take control. This is what happens when we put ourselves first. When we wrestle with God and tell Him that we can do it all. But this is not how God meant for things to be.

[ Do Not Worry ] “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? ...
There will always be things to worry about in this life. Things will never go our way all the time. But if we can learn to let that worry (fear) go, and let God be God, then life can be a lot more peaceful.
