Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you.
Seems simple enough. So why do we have so much trouble following it? We seem to be more into this version:
Do unto others BEFORE they do unto you.
or,
Do unto others BECAUSE they did unto you first.
This is the 'Me Generation'. It's all about me. You don't matter.
We get lost in this thinking because we live in a fallen world. Money, fame, fortune, and lots of big people toys are our priorities. We deceive ourselves when we say we 'deserve it'. What we actually deserve is to be held accountable for our sins, but because of the love of a Savior, we don't have to face that. Christ took our punishment, but that doesn't mean we can stomp on other people knowing we have been forgiven. If anything, that holds us to a higher level of accountability. If you know you are hurting someone else, and choose to do it anyway, then consequences will follow; either in this world or the next.
So I will make an extra effort to get back to the basics. Treat others like you would like to be treated. Shove all that baggage out of the way and see the other person for who and what they are... a person... not competition.
Until next time:
Peace to you and yours,
