It's summer again. I can always tell by the condition of my feet. I love to go barefoot, or with sandals year round. I can do that here in California. Most of the rest of the world can't, but this is one of the major perks of living on the Pacific coast... draught notwithstanding.
I can always tell when the weather turns warm because my feet deteriorate quickly. Even putting lotion on every night may not be enough. They crack, sometimes bleed, and just hurt. And compared to other places in the world, California isn't that hot. Not like the desert. Not like the middle east.
Not like the Biblical times.
Imagine not having a car to drive, or air conditioning. There were no designer shoes, or special orthotics. People often walked 20 miles or more in a day to get where they needed to go. Imagine the condition of their feet.
Imagine Jesus' feet.
He walked everywhere. He covered a lot of miles every day in his three year ministry. He sat on hot hilltops long past exhaustion so more people could hear him. He dined with strangers, never thinking of himself first.
And then a woman - a sinner - poured oil on his feet. This wasn't an act of waste or indulgence as Judas had believed. This was one woman trying to bring some relief and comfort to the man who brought hope. He had comforted her, and she would return the feeling in the only way she knew how. To comfort his dry, cracked, and aching feet. This was personal, tender, and caring. And while she wept over his feet, she dried her tears with her hair. Also part of the gift. Something personal and profound.
So the next time your own feet are hurting and dry, think of how much more our Savior went through, every day, just to bring the world the good news. there were no televisions, internet, or radio. We have it easy compared to what they went through. Both in weather, and circumstances.
Thank you Jesus, for your cracked, dry, and bleeding feet, and the example of the one woman brave enough to comfort you.
