There are a great many self-help options out there. From books, seminars, webinars, classes, camps, and a plethora of other things. These courses are meant to empower you to overcome any obstacles that are holding you back in life. In theory, it is a great idea. In practice, however, these courses have the capacity to run completely off track.
Take, for example, what is commonly known as 'The Me Class'. You don't need any particular degree or education to put one of these on. If you have a great idea in how to enrich other people's lives, you can start a class. The problem is sometimes more harm than good can be done. The key is to relate everything back to the Bible.
So, rather than saying:
I deserve to be happy because (fill in problem here),
Christ teaches,
"I have come that you might have life, and have it abundantly."
Rather than:
I overcame (this situation) all by myself without the help of anybody,
The Bible teaches:
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Or in the more extreme circumstances, rather than giving honor and glory to God for healing, I have actually heard people claim to have healed themselves of tumors and bi-polar disorder, among other things. By sure willpower, people claim to have altered their own documented medical problems. The fact is we cannot do this on our own. God can heal. If mankind could heal ourselves, we would have done this a long, long time ago. Positive attitude and a strong willpower can help, but it is not enough.
Thinking that we have this kind of power, and deserve to have anything because of our disappointing lives is a very dangerous road to go down. Christ came to rescue us from all this life throws at us. He came to take our punishments and sins, so that we can be happy. What we deserve - is what He got, but through his grace and love, we do not have to endure that. It is dangerous to forget that.
The best thing to cling to during the difficult times is this: (and make it personal)
"For God so loved the world (say your own name here), that he gave his only begotten Son, so that whosoever (say your name here) believes in Him shall have eternal life."
Not because we deserve it, but solely because He loves us. Then you can say "I'm whosoever!"
Until next time:
Peace to you and yours,
