Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.
More options for helping the homeless without actually dispensing cash could be these:
Keep your old, give-away jackets or clothes in a box in your trunk. When you see someone cold, or in need, hand them one. If they are cold they will take it.
Keep boxes of non-perishable food as well. Granola bars, pop tarts, etc. When someone tells you they are hungry give them some of those. If they are hungry they will take one.
Women tend to go through purses like crazy. Take your old purses or tote bags and fill them with some essentials. Chap stick, a hair brush, feminine products, snacks, etc. Keep it in your car. When you see a homeless woman who looks like they might need it, give it to her. Or, leave it in an area where you know homeless women frequent. If they need it, they will take it.
Save up all your little hotel room samples. tiny bars of soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc. Have your friends save theirs too. Give these to shelters, or put them in a bag to hand out. With permission from the owners, leave them in gas station rest rooms, or at rest stops along the freeway for hitch hikers.
Be aware of your surroundings. If you are inside a shop getting your hair done and you see someone outside that looks like they need help, pay for them to get a hair cut.
Pay it forward. And let's not forget their pets. Dog food can be especially helpful too.
Go into a Burger King and give the clerk $20.00. Tell them to provide some food to needy children. Do this each week and see what happens. Or ask at your local elementary school if there are any needy children you can donate things to. This is a great way to make use of all of the outgrown children's clothing or uniforms.
Put your mind to it. There's a lot of things that we can do to help out. Everybody needs a little help sometimes. One day that might be you.
Until next time:
Peace to you and yours,
