In Genesis, man was given dominion (power and authority) over all the animals, fish, birds, livestock, and every creature that moves along the ground. But somewhere along the line we have changed the word dominion to domination. Having power and authority over something does not give you the right to abuse that creature. But abuse we do. We abuse the animals, our loved ones, our friends, family, and coworkers. We take out our insecurities on them. We take out our anger and frustrations on them. We try to exert our domination, or control, over them. This is where we get into trouble.
Just because you have the power to do something, does not mean you should. Prisons are filled with people who had the power to commit crimes. That does not mean they had the authority to. In my job I have access to a great number of confidential documents. Just because I can view them, does not mean that I should view them. There is a difference. And should I ever choose to break the law and view something against policy, there will be harsh consequences - just like the people in prison found out.
Is it right to torture small infants?
Is it right to steal things that don't belong to you?
Is is right to try to control something that you have no authority over?
No, no, and no.
Christ was given all dominion (power and authority) over everything in Heaven and in Earth. He is the one in charge of it all. When we try to take control over the things in life that are around us, then we are trying to take that control away from Jesus. One song I hear regularly says it best:
You are God, and I am not.
Until next time:
