I am sitting in the giant Redwoods of the beautiful Santa Cruz mountains right now at a writer's retreat. I try to come as much as I can, though sometimes cost is a hindrance. The place is called Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center, and it is beautiful.
There's something spiritual about being in the mountains. Being away from all the troubles and distractions of life allows me to focus on what is really important. God, and my relationship with Him. My grandfather was a park ranger for decades, first at Yosemite National park when it first opened in 1928, and then at Sequoia/Kings Canyon. I understand why he loved it so much. God is here. Till the day he died, he used to sleep outside, under the stars, breathing the fresh air and listening to the birds.
And the Redwoods are especially encouraging to me. Did you ever notice that they never really grow by themselves, just a single redwood tree by itself. They are typically in clusters of three or more. They also have a very shallow root system. Their roots do not grow down into the ground the way most trees do. They tend to stay just under the surface and spread very wide. With one single tree, they are not very stable, and can tend to fall in a great storm. But with clusters of trees together, their roots intertwine, and they actually stabilize each other, keeping one another standing firm in the storms.
So it is with my Christian friends that I meet here every year. We come here to laugh, learn, grow, and love on each other. Then when we get back home, and the storms of life hit, our roots are strong, and still intertwined with one another, allowing us to stay strong and hold each other up in prayer and support.
Where is your spiritual place? Who holds you up when the storms rage? We all need that special someone that will help us when times are hard, and will keep us pointed to the one thing that matters in life... Jesus, the King.
