"Was your friend a Catholic?"
"No," the man replied.
"I'm sorry son, this is a Catholic cemetery. Only confirmed Catholics can be buried here."
The man argued but the Priest was unrelenting. They finally agreed that the fallen soldier could be buried outside the fence and the Priest agreed to tend to the grave for the soldier. He buried his beloved friend there outside the fence, and returned to fight.
Some time later the soldier came back to say a final good-bye to his fallen friend before he returned home. He walked the fence and searched everywhere for his grave, but could not find it. After searching for some time, he went to find the priest who had promised to care for his grave.
"My son, I am so glad you came back. I was hoping I would see you again."
"Where is my friend's grave?"
"I felt very bad after you left about refusing him a Christian burial, and decided that he deserved an official burial just the same as any other person."
The soldier was incensed. "So you dug him up and moved him in here?"
"No my son. I moved the fence."
This is what Christ does for us. He changed the rules. He was sent to save the chosen people of Israel, but when they refused him, he included us as well. He moved the fence so we could all be with Him for all eternity.
I will never look at a fence the same way again.
Until next time:
