We had yet another tragic school shooting this last week, and as a parent, I was horrified. Thinking back on my own school years, growing up during the years of desegregation and forced bussing, we never had to deal with this. There was school violence, but never deaths. We learned how to get along with people who were different. Being put into new and challenging situations made us grow and appreciate others for who and what they are.
But now, things are different. I feel so helpless watching this violence, and imagine what the parents must be going through. We must send our kids to school, but then are helpless to protect them.
But God can. Let's start a prayer chain, reaching as far and as wide as we can. Every morning as parents drop their children off at school, say this prayer:
Dear Lord, You see the violence in this country against our children. They are not safe and we are powerless to protect them when they are away from us. Please, I beg you, let there not be another school shooting in our country, or the world. Surround our children with your mightiest angels and keep them safe. We are taught in Psalm 23:
1The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Amen.
I learned this verse as a child and it was comforting to me. I pray that this can also be a comfort to the children of this generation that are facing things that we never had to face, and the simple act of going to school has turned deadly for so many.
Spread the word. Every school morning, with hundreds, and thousands of parents praying, not only for our own children but for the children all across this globe, God can hear and protect them. Only He has the power.
