In Biblical times, people were known by their occupation:
Jesus, the carpenter;
Saul, the tent maker;
and, Rahab, the prostitute.
Not the most glamorous of career choices to be sure. And to make matters worse, Rahab lived in the land that was promised to the Jews. In the book of Joshua, some spies were sent out to see if the land (where Rahab lived) could be conquered. At one point the spies, cornered, needed a place to stay, and Rahab took them in to hide.
Nothing special so far, right? There are kind-hearted people wherever you go. Whether you are a foreigner or not, there is typically always someone willing to help you. So she hid these guys out. The soldiers of Jerricho knew the spies were there, and they demanded that she send them out. She refused, and at great risk to herself and her family, hid them.
Rahab was used to having men in her quarters. Nothing happened. Then came the time for them to leave. The spies were going to take information back to the rest of their camp.
"Remember me," she said. BAM! There it is. Faith in action. Not only did she extend a hand of help to these men, but she believed in what they were doing. So much so that she gave her future over to them in a trusting manner. "Remember me."
Because of this single act of faith, God spared her and her entire family. She was to hang a red cloth from her window so those fighting the battle could see where she was to be kept safe. She lived.
And, better than that, because she lived, because of her obedience, and because of her faith, she is one of only four women listed in the genealogy of Christ.
Never underestimate your self-worth, or your contribution. If you have not made the wisest choices with your life, there is always time to turn it around.
