Summer is officially here in sunny California, and that means one thing. Hot pavement. That translates into hot, tired, dry, cracked feet. It happens every year. And no matter how much lotion I put on them, it never seems to be enough. I have to apply it multiple times a day to keep any sort of edge up on the problem. Now picture living in Jesus' time. The main mode of transportation was walking... in sandals, or barefoot... on hot sand. All Day Long! The average person back then walked about 20 miles a day, and more if they were traveling anywhere. In Jesus' ministry it was likely a lot more. And I'm sure there wasn't enough lotion in the world to minister to those hot, dry, cracked feet. That's what makes the story of the woman pouring expensive oil on His feet, and then washing them off with her hair even more poignant for me. You see, these were not the finely manicured feet of an earthly king. These were the feet sacrificed for His kingdom. These were not the rested feet of a man who had servants to do His bidding. These were the feet that walked everywhere to take His message to the world, personally. These were feet that hurt. These were the feet of a messenger and a laborer who worked hard to spread the word of God. His word. I'm sure the woman's feet were in terrible shape too. Women were servants to their husbands and families back then. Her feet were likely tired, sore, aching, and bleeding too - yet she chose not to save the oil for herself, but to give it to the one who was her Savior. Her Lord. Her Jesus. This was one thing that she could do to make a difference. Before his death on the cross (another degradation to His feet) she could make them feel better... make them feel like the King He was, and still is. History does not record her name, but it records the selflessness and honesty of her deed. We can all learn a lesson from her. What can you do to soothe the aches and pains of another? If no one sees it, then it's not real. Right? Which face do you hide behind? Does the world have to see you as perfect, or your life will fall apart? What are you hiding from the world? I was a chubby kid. I still struggle with my weight. When I was growing up, the knowledge of the day was to cover up anything that was unflattering. Many-a chubby kid wore tent dresses, long pants in the hot summer, and long sleeves to cover up flabby arms. If you cover it up, then it wasn't a problem. The problem was that covering it up made it more noticeable. It made things worse. I'm not blaming anyone. People were just doing what they felt was right. But, in the end, it wasn't. How else do we do that today? It seems impossible for some people to admit that they made a mistake. Why acknowledge it when you can simply pretend that it never happened? I didn't know! I wasn't paying attention. Yes, I knew it was happening, but I just chose not to do anything about it. I was just trying to help. It wasn't my fault. That's the bottom line. It wasn't my fault. No one wants to accept responsibility for the hurt that they have directly caused others. If you are hurting, then you must be dysfunctional. You are the problem. Others should be allowed to do anything they want to, and if it hurts you, then you are the problem. It's not their fault. This is not what Christ teaches. Not even close. You cannot be forgiven for your sins unless you acknowledge them. Yes, Lord. I made a mistake. It was my fault and I am sorry. I didn't mean to, but I did. Christ has already taken the punishment for all of our sins. He has born the pain to set us all free. All we need to do is admit our faults. Whatever the source of the sin: not strong enough to stand up to others, severe insecurity, arrogance, selfishness, or something deeper. Reach down inside and do the right thing. Take hold of that sin that has been holding you for so long, and get rid of it. Admit it to God and throw it out the window. Get rid of it before it gets a hold on you again. As long as you hold it inside, there is a chance that it can take over once again. On top of all that, if forgiveness isn't enough, you will earn the respect and love of the people that you have hurt. They will see you in a whole new light. They will see the 'true you' rather than the image that you portray to everyone else. Don't be a "perfect shell" of a human being that is too afraid to admit faults. And don't blame your faults and insecurities on others. Stand up. Take responsibility. Be the bigger person and show others that you struggle with being human too. Others will respect you even more for it. Until next time: Peace to you and yours, Have this blog delivered right to your Kindle! There are all kinds of things up in the sky that we can't see with the human eye. Just the amount of space trash and junk that we have hurled up into space alone is going to someday come back down. Just because we can't identify it, doesn't mean that it's not up there. But does that mean it's an alien? No. There is absolutely no evidence or proof that other civilizations from outer space exist. Despite the trillions of dollars that the world has spent trying to find intelligent life out there, no one has. And yet, we remain fixated on the idea of the UFO. Why is that? A dear friend of mine (who is also a Bible teacher) has a theory on that. If you know anything about the end times, there is a thing coming called the Rapture. This will be when all Christians, living or deceased are called to Heaven in the blink of an eye, leaving everyone else down here. Isn't a mass alien abduction a perfect answer for the doubters and non-believers left behind? It is a semi-plausible explanation to continue to explain away God. Think about it. Even after seeing the world full of believers disappear, there is still a father of all lies telling stories to lead people astray. Sounds plausible to. More so than the possibility that an alien UFO from another planet will some day land here and take over our society for their own reasons. Let's leave the little green men for the movies. I was at Bible study last night and we took turns going around the room telling one another how important they were to us. We had to be specific, and meaningful. Then the leader went on to talk about the Body of Christ, and how we, as individuals have an obligation to take care of each other. We cannot do everything ourselves. We all are gifted individually and together complement each other. What one person cannot do, another can. We need to spend time appreciating each other more. In life it seems that we focus on ourselves... my job, my car, my vacation, my, my, my... When we look at what makes us happy without including those closest to us, then we are forging ahead in life all by ourselves. And at some point, we will find ourselves completely alone. Instead of - I and me, we need to focus more on - we and us. So come on ya'll, let's get on the Us Bus. Look out for each other. Give to one another. Compliment each other. Love each other. You'd be surprised what you will get back out of it. Until next time: Peace to you and yours, Have this blog delivered right to your Kindle! April showers bring May flowers. That's what's happening in my back yard today. I got drenched coming home from work. I sat in my office and listened to the thunder before I got off work. Running about 20 feet to my car I got soaked. I got nature's light show all the way home too. It was beautiful. I started thinking about the beauty of the storm. Great streaks of fiery light through a darkened sky, and the gentle tapping of the rain on my roof. There's something soothing about a thunder storm (as long as you are not caught outside in the middle of it). And more than just that, I thought about the nature of the thunderstorm. They are caused by unstable air at the higher elevations. Cold air and warm air slamming into each other creating a beautiful light show in the sky. Who knew something so unstable would be so beautiful? Life can be unstable too. Sickness, job loss, divorce, you name it, we go through it. But somehow through all of the instability of life, God can create something beautiful. Don't give up. Keep on keeping on. Look for the beauty around you, and in the end, you will see a rainbow! What's the fastest way to hate someone? Don't see them as a person. We see this over and over again throughout history. The Nazi's in WWII thought the Jews were less than human, so it was okay to wipe them out. Building up to the American Civil War, Negroes were thought to be more animal than human. It was okay to enslave and abuse them. The slave owners couldn't have had it more wrong. We see it today too. From the radical religious groups to high school campuses, hatred runs free, and it all starts with the first step, de-humanizing a person. How many times have you heard something like this. "Look at her. She thinks she's so hot. She's such a b*(&^%." So now the person is no longer a person, she is just a b*(&^%, so it is okay to hate since they are not a real person anyway. Once you slap a label on someone, they become that label and cease being a person in many people's minds. How do we prevent this. Stop labeling others to start with. No matter what you think of another person, they are still a human being, and deserve to be treated as such. And just like you may dislike some of the things that they do, they most likely dislike what you do too. Remember: What comes around, goes around; What you sow, so shall you reap; karma's a b*(&^%. And most important, Jesus came to die for all, not just the ones He liked. Until next time: Peace to you and yours, Have this blog delivered right to your Kindle! I am learning more about the faith that I have practiced my whole life. I am now an online Christian Apologetics student at Biola University. Translation: Defending Your Faith. There are some things with this course of study that I struggle with, like the scientific evidence for the existence of God. Science was never my strong suit, and it still is not. Other things make perfect sense, while still others stop me dead in my tracks. Like this question: Why would so many people die, for a lie? People throughout time have offered their theories (and that's all they are, theories) of different circumstances. Like mass hallucinations of seeing Christ after he was crucified. There is no evidence for this, nor any explanations of what caused these hallucinations, but the theory has been thrown out there none-the-less. My personal favorite is that religion (of any kind) is simply a crutch for the weak. Now, just ask anyone who has ever known me and the word weak does not come up. And, if a person was truly that weak, why would they be willing to step up and die for something they believed in? Wouldn't that take greater-than-average strength instead? So we're left with this dilemma. Why would a person give their life for something that was a lie? Well, it's never been proven that it's a lie. Perhaps they are willing to take this step, because it's true. Maybe they know something that you don't. Maybe... just maybe... there's something to this religion-thing after all. Just consider the possibilities, Until next time: Peace to you and yours, Have this blog delivered right to your Kindle!
